Somatic Experiencing

Somatic experiencing (SE) is a type of therapy that helps people heal from trauma by focusing on the sensations in their bodies. SE is based on the theory that trauma causes a dysregulation of the nervous system, which can prevent us from fully processing and releasing the traumatic energy.

SE aims to restore the natural balance of the nervous system by gently guiding clients to notice and release the physical and emotional tension that is stored in their bodies.

Rest your nervous system, reclaim your calm.

Trauma scrambles your body's stress signals. Somatic experiencing doesn't just address the memories; it works directly with your nervous system. Through mindful awareness of physical sensations, you can retrain your natural fight-flight-freeze responses, restoring inner balance and resilience.

A body-based approach to trauma recovery.

SE was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, a psychologist and biophysicist who studied how animals cope with stress and trauma. He observed that animals in the wild are able to shake off the effects of life-threatening situations and return to normal functioning, while humans tend to get stuck in a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal after experiencing trauma.SE is based on the theory that trauma is not caused by the event itself, but by the body's inability to complete its natural response to the event.

When we face a threat, our nervous system activates the fight, flight, or freeze response to help us survive. However, if we are unable to fight or flee, or if we are overwhelmed by the intensity of the situation, we may freeze and dissociate from our body sensations. This can lead to a buildup of unprocessed energy and stress in our nervous system, which can manifest as various symptoms of trauma.
SE aims to help us release this trapped energy and restore our nervous system's balance and resilience.
It does so by using a "bottom-up" approach, which means that it starts with the body sensations and works its way up to the thoughts and emotions.

By bringing awareness to our bodily sensations, we can gradually access and process the traumatic memories that are stored in our body, and discharge the excess energy that keeps us stuck in a state of distress.

How does Somatic Experiencing work?

SE is usually done with a trained therapist who guides us through a series of steps to help us reconnect with our body and heal from trauma. The steps are:- Establishing safety and trust: The therapist helps us create a safe and comfortable environment where we can feel supported and respected.

The therapist also helps us identify our resources, which are anything that makes us feel calm, grounded, or empowered. Resources can be internal (such as positive memories, emotions, or beliefs) or external (such as people, places, or objects).

Somatic Experiencing aims to achieve this through the following steps:

Step 1: Grounding and Establishing Safety
The Science: Creating a sense of safety is crucial for effective trauma therapy. Research suggests that feelings of safety activate the brain's calming parasympathetic nervous system, allowing for deeper processing without re-traumatization (Porges, 2011).

The Practice: Somatic experiencing begins with finding a comfortable position and using techniques like mindful breathing or focusing on physical sensations to establish a sense of presence and safety in the body.
Step 2: Tracking Sensations
The Science: Studies demonstrate a strong link between trauma and disrupted bodily awareness (Van der Kolk, 2014). By reconnecting with physical sensations, those impacted by trauma can begin to untangle the complex mind-body responses.
The Practice: Clients are guided to notice subtle bodily sensations – tension, temperature, tingling, etc. – without judgment or immediate attempts to change them. This mindful observation is the foundation for healing.
Step 3: Pendulation
The Science:
Pendulation, the gentle shifting between difficult sensations and moments of safety, builds resilience and expands the nervous system's capacity to tolerate stress (Levine, 2010).
The Practice:
Clients are encouraged to move between the challenging sensations connected to their experience and feelings of calm and resourcefulness. This process retrains the nervous system for healthier regulation.
Step 4:  Titrated Release
The Science: Unlike therapies that force confrontation, somatic experiencing favors gradual exposure, or "titration." Research suggests this allows for the processing of overwhelming experiences without re-traumatizing the system (Ogden, Minton, & Pain, 2006).
The Practice: With support, clients stay with difficult sensations for slightly longer periods, allowing natural discharge processes to occur (shaking, trembling, crying). This releases trapped survival energy, diminishing the hold of the past.
Step 5: Integration and Restoration
The Science:Successful trauma healing involves re-establishing a sense of balance and wholeness. This can be observed in brain imaging studies where integration shows increased connectivity between brain regions (Van der Kolk, 2014).
The Practice:
Somatic experiencing emphasizes finding deep rest and a sense of embodied calmness. This new baseline empowers clients to move forward from a more grounded and resilient place.
